Cantilever chair

Cantilever chairs: Milano with Vienna cane and Bauhaus originals

The cantilever chair is a chair without rear legs: a curved steel tube supports the seat and gently flexes with every movement. Invented in the 1920s in the Bauhaus circle, it is now one of the most popular dining chairs of all. At Hauptstadt Möblerei, you’ll find our Milano cantilever chair with Vienna cane, made in Italy and available for immediate delivery, as well as a changing selection of original cantilever chairs by Thonet, Knoll, and Walter Knoll.

Cantilever chairs with Vienna cane: the Milano series

Frequently asked questions about cantilever chairs

Are cantilever chairs comfortable?

Yes, especially thanks to their gentle spring. The chair gives slightly when you lean back, which eases strain on your back when sitting at the table for a long time.

Does Vienna straw hold up to everyday use?

For many years with normal use. Don't stand on the seat or sit on it in wet clothes, and the weave will stay taut.

Can I buy individual cantilever chairs?

Yes, the Milano is available in any quantity. Depending on stock, original cantilever chairs are available individually or in pairs; details are listed for each piece.

How can I identify an original Thonet or Knoll cantilever chair?

By the manufacturer's label or stamp under the seat and the quality of the tubular steel workmanship. For our originals, we name the manufacturer and model wherever this can be verified.

Do you also buy furniture?

Yes. We buy vintage and antique furniture in good condition. Send us photos and a short description through our Furniture Buyingpage, and we'll get back to you with an offer.
